Fire Yenta Returns

Middle

By Diane Feldman

After a two-year hiatus, the Fire Yenta is back.

My best FDIC story
A certain FDIC HOT lead instructor suffered windburn and sunburn during FDIC 2007's HOT evolution days. Every night, he applied soothing lotion from the hotel to his skin, and every morning he woke up with bumps on his skin. He repeated this for a few nights, and every morning the bumps got worse and worse. He just couldn't figure out the cause. Was he allergic to the hotel's lotion samples? Finally, he looked more closely at the bottle, only to discover he had been applying the sample bottle of HAIR CONDITIONER to his skin, not lotion!

Can you spot the magazine?
"I now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" is a new movie coming to the big screen July 20. Adam Sandler and Kevin James star as two FDNY firefighters who pretend to be gay for the "partner" benefits. Fire Engineering was asked by the movie company to send copies of the magazine to be used in the movie. The rep claimed he heard "FE is THE magazine firefighters read" and wanted to add authenticity to the characters. See if you can spot the FE magazine in the movie and win a prize. The first person to e-mail me with the correct scene wins.

Number one firefighter injury
What is the number one firefighter injury? Hurt feelings.

And you thought your commute was long?
Glenn Corbett, FE technical editor, visited England recently. A UK firefighter told him that some of their members live in Spain and commute. Apparently it is cheaper to fly from Spain to the UK, which can cost as little as $20-$30 for a round-trip ticket, than it is to take public transportation within England. Think about that during your next long commute to work.

You can't fool us
Some individuals tried to download a certificate of attendance for an FDIC 2007 class that I know was never held because the instructor had to leave early. Just remember, you can't fool us!
