AL firefighter remains in serious condition

Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News (July 24, 2008)
Middle

Jul. 24--A Decatur firefighter is recovering from brain surgery after collapsing at a house fire Tuesday.

Jamie Patterson, 40, of Decatur was transported to Huntsville Hospital by MedFlight after suffering from bleeding in his brain, Fire Marshal Darwin Clark said.

"He got out of surgery Tuesday night, and doctors said the outlook is pretty good," Clark said.

"They said he will be hospitalized for a few more weeks, and he'll need three to four months to recover after he is released."

Patterson was listed in serious condition in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit, a Huntsville Hospital spokeswoman said.

According to Clark, the Patterson family is holding up well and appreciates everyone's support.

"Fellow firefighters have been visiting Jamie and his family at the hospital," he said.

Clark said he is still investigating the suspected arson at 825 Carridale St. S.W., where Patterson collapsed.

Anyone with information about the house fire can contact Clark at 341-4865.
