Registration for IFSI Winter Fire School Opens

The University of Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) opens enrollment for its annual Winter Fire School on Monday, Nov. 2.  The annual school for fire service professionals will be held at IFSI’s Champaign campus from Jan. 23-24, 2016.

Students have a choice to take three of the following classes:

            Forcible Entry

            Basic Engine Company Operations

            Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus

            “Common Sense” Building Construction for the Street Smart Firefighter

            Basic Company Officer

            Fire Origin and Cause Awareness

            Basic Pumps and Dirty Hydraulics

            CP RR301: Responding to Locomotive Emergencies

            Traffic Incident Management

The cost for students to take three classes who pre-register by Jan. 15, 2016 is $60, but will increase to $70 on Jan. 16, 2016 and at the door. Online registration can be found at on the IFSI web site.

Students who register will also get admission to the Saturday night feature, “Tailboard Talk” where a moderated panel discussion will focus on how past experiences can influence future decisions on the fireground. The panelists include: Ed Enright, Chicago FD (retired) Bobbie Hoff, Chicago FD (retired) and Carol Stream FD; Mac McCastland, Oak Lawn FD (retired) Greg Earle, Centralia FPD, Steve Gambrill, Harristown FPD. Moderated by Jim Grady, Frankfort FPD. There is a $20 fee accepted at the door for non-Winter Fire School students.

The Illinois Fire Service Institute is the statutory State Fire Academy for Illinois. In addition to training provided at its Champaign campus, the Institute offers one-day hands-on classes for fire departments at Regional Training Centers and local fire stations across the State.  The mission of the Illinois Fire Service Institute is to help firefighters do their work through training, education, information and research.
