CONTROLLING YOUR HELMET

We have all faced the problem of what to do with our helmets while donning our SCBA, mask, and hood. For a quick and easy way to maintain control of your helmet and to secure your chinstrap after donning your face piece, try this technique currently being taught to probationary firefighters at the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) fire academy.

This procedure eliminates fumbling with the connection of your chinstrap. After practicing it a few times, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you can do it.

1. Place your helmet on your head, and close the chinstrap, allowing it to hang loosely below your chin (photo 1).

2. Bring the mask, with the regulator attached, up to your face and hold it in place (photo 2).

3. While holding the face piece (mask) with one hand, remove your helmet with your other hand, allowing the helmet, with the chinstrap closed, to hang on your arm by the chinstrap (photo 3).

4. Don your face piece straps and protective hood (photo 4).

5. While holding the face piece, slide the helmet back up your arm and place it on top of your head.

6. Tighten chinstrap (photo 5).

Many different types of helmets with various types of chins straps and SCBAs are used around the country. It is very important to practice this technique with your equipment prior to making it policy. Always ensure that you are comfortable with and trained in using this technique before using it at a working fire.
