Old Servel gas refrigerators pose carbon monoxide hazard

Servel gas refrigerators manufactured between 1933 and 1957 have caused 22 carbon monoxide-related deaths and 55 injuries nationwide and 60 deaths in Ontario, Canada, reports the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The units, which are no longer produced, generally are found in hunting cabins, vacation cottages, and remote areas of the nation where there is no electricity or where gas is the preferred energy source.

Consumers are to stop using these refrigerators immediately. They may call the Servel Corrective Action Committee at (800) 782-7431. They will receive a rebate package that includes instructions for disposing of the refrigerator, a $100 rebate, and reimbursement for reasonable disposal costs. n
