RICK HOPKINS has assumed his duties as volunteer coordinator for Tualatin Valley (OR) Fire & Rescue. In his new position, Hopkins oversees the training and activities for more than 125 volunteer firefighters, who augment the department`s 234 career personnel. He is currently president of the Oregon Fire Chiefs Association.
Captain ROBERT HODGE and Firefighter KEVIN PRESUTTI of the West New York (NJ) Fire Department were honored for their efforts in rescuing a trapped occupant in a second-floor apartment during a fire.
In addition to other units, Truck 321 with Hodge, Presutti, and one other member responded at approximately 1 a.m. to a fire alarm at a two-story brick building with an electronics store on the first floor and an apartment on the second. Heavy fire was blowing out the showcase windows of the store and extending to the second floor. A report of a trapped occupant was received. While an engine company was establishing a water supply and another engine was attempting to provide access to rescue the trapped occupant, Hodge and Presutti forced the front entrance door. With no hoseline in place, they crawled upstairs to the second floor and searched for the victim. Finding him, they dragged him back to the top of the stairs as conditions worsened. Exhausted, all three tumbled down the flight of stairs. Incoming personnel with a charged hoseline removed the three men to the outside.
Captain Hodges and Firefighter Presutti have received special commendations from their mayor, director of public safety, and board of commissioners.
