MICHAEL CALDERWOOD   >> Carlsbad (CA) Fire Department (CFD) Battalion Chiefs MIKE LOPEZ (right) and MICHAEL CALDERWOOD (below) were named as the CFD’s new division chiefs following a leadership transition that also included the promotion of Michael Davis to chief. Lopez was promoted to division chief in October 2013 following a five-year tenure as battalion chief. He joined the CFD in 1996 as a firefighter/paramedic and was promoted to captain in 2005 and to battalion chief in 2008. Calderwood was promoted to division chief in November 2013 after serving as a paramedic/captain from 2007-11 and as a battalion chief from 2011-13. He began working with the CFD in 2003 as a firefighter/paramedic.   MIKE LOPEZ

KEVIN SEAMAN, medical director of the Howard County (MD) Department of Fire and Rescue Services, was recognized as one of the EMS 10: Innovators in EMS 2013 at the EMS Today Conference in Washington, D.C. The EMS 10 program is sponsored by Physio Control and the Journal of Emergency Medical Services and recognizes 10 EMS providers who have introduced significant innovations in the field in the past year. Seaman was selected for his efforts involving improved response, survival rates, and care for sudden cardiac arrest patients. This has made Howard County one of the leading jurisdictions in the resuscitation of cardiac arrest victims. www.emstoday.com.

>> GLENN ERICKSEN retired as chief of the Arlington Heights (IL) Fire Department (AHFD) on February 13 to become the section chief of administration with the Illinois Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS). The intergovernmental state MABAS program includes divisions of fire departments and emergency personnel who provide backup response with staffing and equipment for major incidents. It is funded by state and federal grants and membership dues. Ericksen is a 39-year veteran of the AHFD who started out as a dispatcher in 1974. He had been deputy chief of operations before being named chief in 2004.
