Drawn by Fire: Board-Checked Passion

Firefighter board checks other firefighter in hockey

There’s nothing quite like the passion and enthusiasm you feel when starting your fire service career, beginning a journey with a new fire department, or simply changing crew assignments. The positive vibes and constructive possibilities seem endless—until you’re checked into the boards by a firefighter or crew with a poor work ethic and virulent attitude toward the department, the community, each other, and yes, you! It’s easy to say, “stay passionate,” but not easy to accomplish when everything around you is toxic. It takes work, conviction, resilience, and determination to keep yourself motivated and to slowly change the attitudes of others around you. Will it always work? No. And you may need to slap your career/service puck into another zone on the ice to find your place to make a true difference. Life is full of board checks, but it’s how you get back onto the ice and skate that defines you!

STAY FIRED UP, and skate like the wind!
