FDIC 2024 Service Award: Michael Beard

Fire Engineering Editor in Chief David Rhodes and Indianapolis Division Chief Michael Beard

FDIC International has presented its FDIC 2024 Service Award to Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department Division Chief Michael Beard.

Beard began his firefighting career in 2001. His first permanent spot was on Ladder 34, where he spent almost 13 years, leaving after being promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

In November 2023, he became the fire marshal for Indianapolis. His involvement with FDIC includes overseeing the deputy fire marshals who provide VIP transportation for the conference and code enforcement throughout. He also is in charge of decorating/setting up the main stage for the Opening Ceremony.

In 2023, Beard added yet another item to his responsibilities. He became the official “ringer of the bell” at the Opening Ceremony, replacing retired Indianapolis Chief Jimmy Greeson.

FDIC Education Director David Rhodes said, “For the entire duration of the conference, Michael is involved, working hard to make sure it is successful, being available 24/7 to answer calls, and completing any task needing to be done. Chief Beard does all these things seamlessly while always having a smile on his face. Chief Beard, for your incredible work ethic and dedication, we are proud to award you the FDIC 2024 Service Award.”
