An open-door policy means nothing if the person on the other side is closed-minded or uninterested in what you have to say.
An open-door policy encourages communication, discussion, feedback and all company officers and firefighters should be able to express any concern or questions without fear of repercussion. However, and it’s a BIG however, it is not a method to go around the chain of command or tell on other firefighters, or to complain non-stop about frivolous matters that clearly need to be addressed at the company level. It can also give the misconception that only senior leaders can solve problems, which is clearly not the case.
The thing is, if you’re going to state you have an open-door policy, you might want to let everyone understand what that policy really means. It needs more clarity than a platitude.
