Aaron Fields of the Seattle (WA) Fire Department addressed the crowd at FDIC International 2019’s second day of Opening Ceremonies.

“Work fixes everything,” Fields told the assembly Thursday. Fields recounted his history in the fire service and his approach to the job, which focuses on the hands-on aspects of the job. Expressing skepticism about the “ether” of social media and its relation to the profession, he instead exhorted firefighters to focus on doing—the tangible objectives that fire professionals need to accomplish to succeed on the fireground.

Fields returned to the them of comfort being the enemy of growth. No matter how accomplished a firefighter becomes, he said, always anticipate that one can become better at the job.
