■ Farmington, New Mexico, located in the northwest corner of the state, has a population of 40,000 within 24 square miles. The fire department needed a multipurpose vehicle for use in fire investigation, haz-mat incidents, and mobile command situations. Deputy Chief Bill Robertson was instrumental in designing the unit, built by Lynch Display Vans, Inc. (LDV) and mounted on a 25,000-pound G.V.W. International forward-control Model 1652SC chassis.

■ In the Town of Lantana, Florida, located on the Atlantic Ocean in Palm Beach County, the Fire-Rescue Department operates this Emergency One HUSH pumper. The department provides fire suppression and emergency medical paramedic service to the five communities in about a 50-square-mile area crisscrossed by the InterCoastal Waterway, two railway lines, and a section of 1-95. The area contains a major section of beach, two hospitals, and a crosssection of industries and residences, all susceptible to a variety of emergency calls.

To expand the pumper’s versatility, removable stretcher brackets are located in the cab, which is air-conditioned and has seating for six. The brackets allow the unit to function as a patient transport vehicle when incidents warrant.

The pumper has a 1,500-gpm Hale pump with top-mount control. The right side has five-inch Storz intakes and a five-inch Storz discharge. The vehicle carries 500 gallons of water and has prepiped foam; threeand five-inch supply hose; a hydraulic ladder rack, which allows access to storage compartments on the right side; crosslays for attack lines; and extendable quartz flood lights.

■ The Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority in Allentown, Pennsylvania, operates this combined agent crash vehicle at the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton International Airport (ABE).

According to Lt. Craig Walter, the apparatus was designed based on increasing traffic at the facility and the need for a rapidresponse vehicle that could be staffed and operated by one person. Increased vehicular traffic on roadways and in parking lots produced the need for a smaller vehicle with the ability to access these areas.

The aluminum truck is Crash Rescue Equipment Service, Inc.’s model CAV-5(X), mounted on an International 4X(X) chassis. The unit has a Darley model HE 5fX)-gpm single-stage pump and a fourcylinder diesel engine.

A 75-gallon foam tank and 5(X) pounds of dry chemical are carried on board and piped to a twin-agent reel and bumper turret. 7’he joystick-controlled bumper turret has a 150to 300-gpm foam/water nozzle and a 16-lb. second dry chemical nozzle as well as a spotlight.

The 170-inch-wheelbase vehicle has four-wheel drive and pumpand-roll capability due to the separate pump engine.
