APPARATUS DELIVERIES

Union Township, located in Union County, New Jersey, has more than 51,000 residents and encompasses nine square miles. It is interlaced by US Highway 22, 1-78, the Garden State Parkway, and three state highways. It is primarily residential with mixed commercial, office, and industrial areas with several hazardous-materials complexes.

The fire department recently placed in service a combination rescue-pumper from Pierce to replace a 750-gpm pumper and a squad with a 250-gpm pump. Of the 2,600 alarms the department answers annually, about 500 are for highway accidents, for which this unit is outfitted. According to Deputy Chief Charles O. Hoffman. Jr., their main concern was having this unit built to carry all the needed pumper and squad equipment and yet be able to fit into the station.

The unit is built on a lance chassis with a tilt cab that seats six It has a Watcrous 1,500-gpm two-stage pump and carries 500 gallons of water. It has a front, preconnected swiveled intake and two supplementary preconnected intakes on the sides. There is a 4-inch discharge on the right side. The vehicle carries 1,500 feet of 3-inch hose anti has a prepiped Elkhart “Stinger” with 1,000-gpm nozzle.

Other features include 12 tool compartments and ground ladders stored under the hoscbcd, a front-mounted 6-ton winch, a cascade system, an Onan 12-kw diesel generator, two 1,500-watt telescoping and six 500-watt portable floodlights, a Hurst tool stored below the ladder rack, and Dutch doors behind the cab canopy. The Fort Worth, Texas Fire Department protects an area of about 295 square miles with a population of 450,000. The district consists of mostly residential construction with a small percentage of commercial and industrial buildings. The department recently received two Emergency One Hush pumpers.

“Rear-engined pumpers are essential for firefighter safety,” says Deputy ChiefS.l.. Williams. “Excessive heat and noise are kept out of the cab, making the ride more comfortable, quieter, and safer for the firefighters since they have the ability to hear the radio and communicate better.”

The units have low cab steps, grooved aluminum handrails, ground illumination, and reflective blue striping. They have a 178-inch wheelbase, a 36-foot turning radius, and a 9’/4-foot travel height.

The pumpers each have a Hale, QSMGT, 1,250-gpm pump and carry 500 gallons of water and 1,200 feet of 4-inch hose.

According to Deputy Chief W illiams, all Fort Worth firefighters are trained emergency medical technicians, and the apparatus is fully equipped with medical-rescue compartments designed to carry’ the necessary supplies.

The Rockford, Illinois Fire Department has in service a Darley allaluminum pumper that features a crew module behind the tilt cab. Division Chief Arthur Timm says that safety’ and comfort considerations are what warranted the crew module. There is fully-enclosed seating for five personnel.

The unit is mounted on a Ford C-8000 chassis and has a 175-inch wheelbase. It has a Darley SE, two-stage, 1,000-gpm pump and carries 500 gallons of water. There is a 20-gallon foam tank combined with a foam gravity eductor and 1 ½-inch outlet at the rear of the apparatus.

GENERATOR/LIGHT UNIT

Iowa-American Firefighting Equipment Co. Inc.’s GEN-IJTE is a combination hand-held generator and light unit. It consists of a 500watt generator physically mated with a Quartz Halogen Lamp Miser unit. A 1.1 -hp, two-cycle gas engine powers the generator, which can also be used to power other lights from a 110-volt or 12-volt auxiliary outlet.

A fire at a BioLabs facility in Conyers, Georgia, has sent a toxic cloud over Rockdale County and disrupted large swaths of metro Atlanta.
