The Riddle (OR) Fire Protection District designed this MIDWEST pumper/tanker with a short wheelbase to negotiate rural roads with tight turns and switchbacks, explains Chief Rich Holloway. The department protects a largely rural area with water supplied by tankers.

The Anoka-Champlin (MN) Fire Department’s PIERCE rescue/command vehicle has a dual purpose. Chief Charlie Thompson says that the command center was a joint effort of the fire department and law enforcement, adding versatility and flexibility to the truck. It is also a heavy rescue large enough to carry all equipment for year-round emergencies. The previous truck was smaller and had to have seasonal equipment exchanged for winter and summer emergencies.
Features/Equipment:
- Velocity chassis with 254-inch wheelbase and three-door cab (to accommodate command center) with 20-inch raised roof and eight seats;
- CUMMINS ISL 9 450-hp diesel engine with ALLISON fifth-generation 3000 EVS-P automatic transmission;
- 26-inch extended front bumper for hydraulic rescue tools and reels;
- 21½-foot nonwalk-in rescue body with GORTITE roll-up compartment doors, GIRARD awning, three wheel well sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders, and three pairs of rope anchors;
- command desk and chairs;
- four-bottle air cascade system with two bottle SPACE SAVER fill system;
- WARN 4½-ton portable winch with four receivers;
- TNT rescue tools;
- PHILLIPS Heart Start AED; and
- light and power with an ONAN 25-kw PTO generator and WHELEN brow and scene lights.
The City of Vernon (British Columbia, Canada) Fire Rescue protects a semirural area with few hydrants. Deputy Chief Jack Blair says the department’s jurisdiction also encompasses a large wildland area that can be accessed by dirt roads. The department’s tanker, built by FORT GARRY FIRE TRUCKS, is used for these areas.
