Bridgewater, Massachusetts is a town with a population of 18,000 located in the southeastern part of the state. Highways 1-495 and 1-24 pass through it. The fire department also protects Bridgewater State College and MCI State Prison.

According to Deputy Chief David Brazil, their new pumper was designed as a rescue-pumper and first-line attack unit for largevolume water flow. “We specified a conventional cab because we felt it offered more room than a tilt cab and is very economical. The crew module has jumpseats for two firefighters and storage of medical and haz-mat supplies such as jump kits, air bags, and hand tools,” says Brazil.

The pumper is the Protector XL model built by Emergency One on a CMC C-7 chassis with a wheelbase of 215 inches. The pump is a Hale QLF 1,250-gpm two-stage featuring a 4-inch discharge with Storz coupling and a 3-inch pipe to an Elkhart Stinger heavy stream appliance. There are two 2-inch crosslays above the pump and five other 2 1/2-inch discharges. The pumper is equipped with a rear preconnected 95-gpm foam eductor, has 1,000 feet of 4-inch hose, and carries 750 gallons of water.

There arc seven exterior body compartments and two within the crew module. Above the module are two 500-watt telescoping quartz lights and the vehicle carries a Hale 4.2-kw generator. Sleeves for SCBA bottles are above the rear axle. (Photo by Charles E. Lowe.)

The city of Roseburg, Oregon, situated along the scenic Umpqua River, has a population of 16,500.

The department wanted an apparatus with both pumping and aerial abilities to meet the needs of both the city and the greater Roseburg area, according to Lieutenant Sam Phillips. The safety of the 4-door cab was also a consideration, he adds.

The quint is a Simon-LTI model ST-2000. It has a 248-inch wheelbase and an Olympian 4-door cab with seating for six. It has a Waterous CSU. 1,500-gpm, single-stage pump. It features a 4 1/2-inch midship discharge and two crosslay discharges for two 1 3/4-inch attack lines.

At the platform of the 100-foot tower are wo monitors with 1,000-gpm TFT nozzles. A 5-inch pipe directly fed from the pump tapers to 4 inches as it ascends to the platform to feed these nozzles. It also can be used to feed two 2 1/2-inch attack lines in the platform. The platform has a 1,000-lb. payload capacity, and the outrigger spread is 18 feet. The vehicle carries 250 gallons of water, 1,500 feet of 5-inch hose, and a 6-kw Onan diesel generator with direct drive. It has 17 compartments and is equipped with two 500-watt floodlights and two 277-cubic-foot air cylinders to serve masks on the platform. (Photo by Tracy Fox.)

East Orange, New Jersey covers 3.9 square miles and has a population of about 80,000. Deputy Chief Joseph H. McCarthy says that because there are many older frame structures in the town and overcrowding poses a potentially high life hazard, they specified their new rear-mounted aerial unit for strength and safety. When used at full extension, it can reach many of the structures that are set back from the curb line.

‘Ehe apparatus, built by American LaFrance on a Century 200 chassis, has a four-door cab seating seven. It has a Detroit 8V 92TA and Allison HT 740 automatic transmission with a Jake Brake. The unit has an all-aluminum cab and body, including compartment doors (12-gauge Series 304L stainless steel) that enclose eight tool compartments. The unit has a tandem rear axle and a wheelbase of 236 inches.
