APPARATUS DELIVERIES: The Anderson, AK Fire Department protects a very rural area

The Anderson (AK) Fire Department protects a very rural area with only one static water supply. Chief Scott Thompson says the department uses this FORT GARRY INDUSTRIEStanker primarily for water supply, so the pump’s size was kept small.


Features/Equipment:

  • INTERNATIONAL 7400 6 × 4 chassis with 251-inch wheelbase and three-seat cab;
  • INTERNATIONAL DT 570 330-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 3000 EVS automatic transmission and pump-and-roll capability;
  • DARLEY HM single-stage, 500-gpm PTO pump with two 1½-inch crosslays;
  • PRO POLY 3,000-gallon water tank with 2½-inch rear direct tank fill and NEWTON 10-inch dump valve; and
  • 3,000-gallon FOL-DA-TANK with low-temperature black Artic liner on a ZICO Quic-Lift tank rack.

The Surprise (AZ) Fire Departmentsupports a ladder truck with its E-ONE ladder tender. Administrative Captain Brenden Espie explains that the department receives a lot of EMS calls, which the tender answers, leaving behind the larger, heavier truck. The unit is equipped to respond to fires and other calls received while returning to quarters.

The Alsip (IL) Fire Department uses its SEAGRAVE pumper as an ALS engine to back up its ambulance, which is staffed with two paramedics. According to Deputy Chief Terry Vrshek, the unit has a foam system to handle fires and flammable spills at two truck-loading facilities and to respond to incidents involving a toll highway passing through town.

The Concord Township (IN) Fire Department, a combination department, designed this MARION pumper for versatility so it could respond to fires and rescues, Chief Lew Austin says. Primarily, it responds to vehicle fires, extrications, hazmats, and mass-casualty incidents.

  • SPARTAN Gladiator Classic chassis with 219-inch wheelbase and six-seat cab with 20-inch raised roof;
  • DETROIT Series 60 425-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 4000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • HALE, MP single-stage, 1,000-gpm PTO pump with HYPRO Foam Pro 2001 system, 1¾-inch front bumper line, and 2½-inch and 1¾-inch preconnects in rooftop walkway accessible from rear of apparatus;
  • UPF 500-gallon water and 30-gallon Class A and Class B foam tanks;
  • 20-foot nonwalk-in body with ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors, storage for eight spare SCBA cylinders, and transverse rack for backboards and STOKES basket;
  • rear ZICO swing-down access ladder;
  • RAMSEY 4.5-ton portable winch with four receivers;
  • HOLMATRO rescue tools; and
  • light and power with WILL BURT Power Lite light tower, seven FRC lights (one brow, four fixed scene lights on body, two tripod floodlights), and two WELDON fixed scene lights on cab.

In Ohio, the Sandusky and Huron Fire Departments purchased twin rapid response fire rescue boats from NORTHWIND MARINE, INC. Sandusky Assistant Chief Paul E. Ricci and Huron Chief Paul D. Berlin say that the boats are designed for all hazard and EMS response on Lake Erie; the units are in the water from April 1 to November 30. Each unit responds with a land-based crew and also assists with inland firefighting.

  • built-in starboard dive door and open aft area to provide a platform for dive operations;
  • pilothouse designed to accommodate medical emergencies with casualty bench and trauma supplies;
  • bow ladder that doubles as a push knee (Sandusky boat only);
  • integrated RAYMARINE E 120 Series radar/chart plotter/depth sounder; and
  • NORTHWIND 2½-ton capacity aft davit.

The Lake Carmel (NY) Fire Department designed this SMEAL pumper with a large water tank because of the nonhydranted jurisdiction. An intake on all sides of the vehicle allows for portable tank operations, says Second Assistant Chief James Hauth. The unit has a powerful engine for the hills and a top-mount pump panel for operator safety and visibility.
