A woman died Sunday after she was hospitalized when a St. Paul fire truck and a Chevrolet Malibu crashed Saturday night in downtown St. Paul, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Fire department personnel extricated two adults from the Chevrolet and St. Paul fire medics transported them to Regions Hospital.
The passenger, Dianne Kyte, 76, of Northfield, had been in critical condition and died Sunday.
Her husband, Charles Kyte, 77, was the driver. He was treated at the hospital and released. Charles Kyte is the former Northfield Public Schools superintendent and past executive director of the Minnesota Association of School Administrators.
The fire engine was responding to a fire emergency, according to the fire department. The two vehicles collided in the intersection of East Seventh and Cedar streets, the State Patrol said. St. Paul officers were called to the crash just before 7 p.m.
A 39-year-old firefighter, Nathan Hurliman, was operating the fire engine and there were three firefighters on board; no injuries were reported among them, according to the State Patrol.
“(O)ur primary concern is for the civilians who were affected,” St. Paul Fire Chief Butch Inks said in a Sunday statement. “… (W)e are committed to supporting them in any way possible.”
St. Paul police asked the State Patrol to investigate due to the involvement of a city vehicle, according to a police spokesman.
