Carbon monoxide detectors, scuba tank valves, and kerosene heater wick holders among products recalled

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced the following product recalls:

Revco Products, Inc. (Huntington Beach, California) Gas Sniffer Model 840 carbon monoxide detectors. The alarm may fail to sound when hazardous levels of carbon monoxide are present. The detectors were sold in the eastern United States through various coal stove and fireplace accessory stores from June 1986 to August 1995. The detectors should be returned immediately to Revco Products, 5622-B Research Dr., Huntington Beach, CA 92649. The company will provide a replacement and reimburse postage up to $3. For more information, call Revco Products at (800) 658-4658.

Trident Diving Equipment (Chatsworth, California) Model RP73 screw-in scuba diving tank valve caps. If tank pressure is 3,000 psi or greater, the valve cap is not properly inserted, and the air valve is on, the cap may fracture and pop out of the tank, causing injury. The cap is used to prevent sand, dirt, or dust from contaminating the area around the valve of the scuba diving compressed air tank. the caps were sold between January and June 1995 through Trident`s catalog and dive shops nationwide. Replacement caps are available from Trident at (800) 234-3483.

RMC International, Ltd. (Denver, Colorado) Model CT-1200 kerosene heater wick holders. The holders may fail during use and prevent the shutoff switch and tip-over safety mechanism from extinguishing the heater. The holders were sold through mass merchandisers and smaller retailers nationwide from June to November 1994 under the brand names Dyna-Glo, Envirotemp, and Keroheat. Contact RMC at (800) 433-6042 for a free replacement.

New York Lighter Co., Inc. (Brooklyn, New York) “City-Lites” and “Liberty-Lites” disposable cigarette lighters. They do not extinguish after use and, in the case of Liberty-Lites, can flare up during use. Ten incidents, including a car fire and four burn injuries, have been associated with these lighters.

The lighters were imported before the July 12, 1994, childproof mandatory standard became effective and do not have the child-resistant feature of lighters distributed after that date. Child-resistant and childproof versions of these lighters are not subject to the recall. The recalled lighters were distributed nationwide through convenience stores and service stations. They come in various colors and have a metal flame hood that has the brand name–or, in the case of City-Lites, the name “C-LITES”–engraved on the hood. The lighters were sold in packages of three for about $2. Consumers owning these lighters should call (800) 626-4732 to receive a postage-paid mailer for returning them. The company will send a novelty product with a retail value of about $5 to cover any inconvenience.

Creative Technologies (Brooklyn, New York) Sixty Second Grill Express Grills, Model G250. The heating element in the grill`s base can become dislodged and cause the plastic base to melt. The grills have date codes that run between 9437 and 9448. The code is located just above a silver foil label on the underside of the grill (rubbing the date code with the side of a pencil will make the date code easier to read). The grill lid, attached to the base by two hinges, has the words “GRILL EXPRESS BY CTC” printed on the front right corner. The grills were sold through retail stores, mail-order catalogs, and television infomercials nationwide from October 1994 to January 1995.
