>> After completing its charitable holiday “Salute to Local Heroes” campaign, SEARS HOMETOWN AND OUTLET STORES, INC. and its subsidiaries raised and will donate more than $200,000 to first responders in its stores’ local communities. Administered in partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), the campaign will provide fire and EMS departments across the nation with critical funds to improve resources for training, equipment, and financial support where the local heroes need it most. >> PIERCE MANUFACTURING INC. presented Specialist Noel Bossen of Fort Bliss, Texas, with a customized Ford F-150 4 × 4 SuperCrew pickup truck for winning its Support for the Long Haul program sweepstakes to benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). Since partnering with the NFFF, Pierce has generated donations of more than $340,000 to assist the organization. Bossen was presented the grand prize in a surprise ceremony (which can be seen on YouTube) at the Fort Bliss Fire Department. GORE & ASSOCIATES has worked with fire departments, dealers, and manufacturers throughout North America to assess and reseal, as necessary, the seams of turnouts with Gore moisture barriers following its November 2013 product safety alert. >> UNDERWRITERS LABORATORIES (UL) will invest $250,000 in the University of Maryland’s (UMD’s) Department of Fire Protection Engineering. The gift is the largest single donation in the department’s history and will support the Fire Protection Engineering Legacy Campaign for a professor of the practice. The commitment of support solidifies a longstanding partnership between UL and UMD that was initiated by Dr. John Bryan, the first chair of the Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the university. UMD’s Department of Fire Protection Engineering offers the only accredited undergraduate program of its kind in the nation and is one of only three graduate programs across the U.S. www.eng.umd.edu.

>> OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION (OSHA) announced Dorothy Dougherty as its new deputy assistant secretary. Dougherty has more than 32 years of federal experience, serving 22 years in OSHA and several years in the Mine Safety and Health Administration as an industrial hygienist and coal mine inspector. She also served as the director of OSHA’s Directorate of Standards and Guidance. Dougherty first joined OSHA as chief of the Compliance and Technical Guidance Division for the Office of Federal Agency Programs. www.osha.gov.

>> The AMERICAN FIRE SPRINKLER ASSOCIATION (AFSA) announced Joseph A. Heinrich, president of Bamford Fire Sprinkler Co., as chairman of the AFSA’s 2013-2014 Board of Directors. Heinrich entered the industry as a fitter in 1972 and has nearly 40 years of experience in design, estimating, sales, and administration. His company joined AFSA in 1982, and he has since served on the AFSA Board since 2004.
