NAMES IN THE NEWS

RODERICK J. FRASER, JR., has been named the fire commissioner for Boston, Massachusetts. He recently completed a 20-year career with the United States Navy, finishing as the commanding officer of the U.S.S. Underwood, a ship that protected offshore oil terminals and trained the Iraqi navy in antiterrorism protection, firefighting, ship handling, and maritime security procedures. During his career in the Navy, Fraser also served as director of engineering, damage control, and firefighting training at the Surface Warfare Officers School Command in Newport, Rhode Island. In his post at the U.S.S. Underwood, Fraser was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for commanding a multinational force during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

BRIAN BRAUER has been named assistant director for the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI). He will be responsible for managing and overseeing all firefighter training for IFSI’s Champaign training facility and regional training centers. In addition, he will work with the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal for approval of coursework for state fire service certification. Brauer also will be responsible for establishing and implementing live-burn training standards for all of IFSI’s burn-related training and for incorporating national homeland security training standards into IFSI curriculum and training.
