NAMES IN THE NEWS

ALAN BLACK has been named vice president of the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) Department of Public Safety, succeeding Alvy Dodson, who retired. A 26-year veteran of the department, Black has served as chief since 1999 and is dual-certified as a police officer and firefighter. He added a number of safety and security innovations in the post-9-11 era at the airport, and the fire training center has become a global model. BRIAN McKINNEY has been named the department’s new assistant director of public safety. Under the direction of Black, McKinney will serve as chief of fire services, responsible for assisting in the overall planning, directing, and coordinating of DFW public safety functions; emergency response programs; professional development; international fire training facility management; customer safety programs; and emergency and disaster planning.

EDWARD “NED” McMAHON, chief of Basking Ridge (NJ) Fire Company No. 1, has passed away. He joined the company in 1995 and has been chief since 2005. He had served as chief of the ExxonMobil Fire Department and hazmat team in Bayonne, New Jersey, and most recently was the pier coordinator and safety supervisor at the ExxonMobil plant in Linden. McMahon was also a fire instructor at the Texas A&M Emergency Services Training Institute in College Station.

JOHN BAILOT has been named the new commander/chairman of the St. Louis County (MO) Hazardous Materials/WMD Emergency Response Team. The deputy chief/fire marshal of the Kirkwood Fire Department, Bailot has extensive hazmat command experience and has served as the team’s deputy commander/vice chairman since 2003. MIKE DAVIS, a battalion chief with the Monarch Fire Protection District, was named the team’s new deputy commander/vice chairman. Davis has been involved in training team members and new hazmat technicians in the region.

ADAM P. POPIEL of Oklahoma State University was awarded the 2007 Phillip L. Turner Scholarship by the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers’ Association. Popiel holds an associate’s degree in fire protection engineering technology from Delaware Technical and Community College, and is a junior at Oklahoma State University in the fire protection and safety engineering technology program.
