Carbon-fiber SCBA cylinder technology under DOT review

The Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA) of the Department of Transportation (DOT) is currently reviewing applications for carbon-fiber wrapped air cylinder designs. A draft standard setting minimum acceptability criteria was distributed to the applicants and other interested parties in late April 1996 for review and comment. Approval for carbon-fiber wrapped air cylinders for use by firefighters and other users of self-contained breathing apparatus is anticipated within the next several months, according to the RSPA.
