The Birmingham (AL) International Airport uses this CRASH RESCUE EQUIPMENT SERVICE unit as a quick-attack mini-pumper for structural fires as well as a dual-agent unit for aircraft firefighting, explains Battalion Chief Glendon Colvin.

  • light and power with HONDA five-kw gasoline generator, two FRC midship floodlights, and two HANNAY electric cord reels.

The Philadelphia (PA) Fire Department has assigned this LDV special operations unit and one other as second vehicles to its squad companies, explains Special Operations Chief Fred Endrikat. In addition to engine company duties, the squads respond to technical rescues, haz mats, and significant fires with the two units, augmenting the rescue company and haz-mat task force.

The Anderson County (SC) Fire Department replaced the last of its gasoline-powered engines with this E-ONE pumper, one of eight. According to Chief Billy Gibson, since the department protects a 60-percent rural jurisdiction, it specified a large water tank.

The Mountain Home (ID) Fire Department designed this PIERCE pumper (one of three) to protect a rapidly growing city and provide mutual aid to its rural department and to a nearby U.S. Air Force Base, explains Chief Engineer Alan Roberts.

  • two wheel well sleeves for six spare SCBA cylinders; and
  • light and power with HARRISON six-kw, hydraulic generator, three FRC floodlights (one brow, two at rear of cab), two WELDON scene lights on sides of cab, and HANNAY electric cord reel.

The Bristol Borough (PA) Fire Department replaced a 55-foot articulating platform with no pump with this AMERICAN LAFRANCE quint. Chief Herb Stack reports the department now has the versatility of a pump and a single-axle unit to maneuver around tight streets and fit into the station.

  • LIITLE GIANT ladder mounted above pump panel; and
  • light and power with HARRISON 10-kw hydraulic generator, 12 HAVIS SHIELDS floodlights (one each on four sides of cab, two on tripods behind cab, two pole raise at front of body, two on driver’s side on top of body, and two at aerial tip), four HAVIS SHIELDS COLLINS spot/floodlights at aerial tip and base, and two HANNAY electric cord reels.

The Manistique (MI) Department of Public Safety designed this SMEAL pumper with a top-mount pump panel for operator safety and increased visibility, according to Public Safety Officer Timothy Russell. The cab is used for rehab; the foam is used for responses to sawmills, petroleum facilities, and highway incidents; and the large water tank was specified to protect certain nonhydranted areas in the district.
