From May 18 to May 29, CHICAGO (IL) FIRE DEPARTMENT (CFD) firefighters participated in the Bike to Fight pediatric cancer bike ride, riding bicycles beginning in Chicago and traveling around Lake Michigan to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Twenty CFD firefighters began in Chicago and travelled 950 miles through midwest cities including South Haven, Michigan; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Kenosha, Wisconsin; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on bicycles over 12 days. The Bike to Fight pediatric cancer bike ride was organized by Chicago firefighter charity, Ignite the Spirit. Money raised will be donated to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Chicago’s Children’s Memorial Hospital through the 41 & 9 Foundation. http://cfdblaze.com.

FM GLOBAL has earmarked $400,000 during 2010—a seven percent increase from 2009—to help organizations worldwide more effectively prevent fire in their communities. Because fire costs companies nearly $2 million on average in property loss per incident, FM Global has awarded millions of dollars in fire prevention grants through its Fire Prevention Grant Program for more than 35 years. In 2009, fire departments, brigades, and other related agencies in the United States, Canada, India, Brazil, and the United Kingdom received $2,500, on average, in FM Global Fire Prevention Grants to bolster loss prevention initiatives such as community education, prefire planning, and arson prevention. www.fmglobal.com/grants.

Children of police officers and firefighters from Indiana and Tennessee were awarded $10,000 in scholarships by the ELECTRONIC SECURITY ASSOCIATION (ESA) through the ESA Youth Scholarship Program. Altogether, ESA and its participating chartered state associations awarded $41,000 in scholarships to 29 winners from more than 680 applications. The program has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships since its inception in 1996. Claire Williams of Greenfield, Indiana, was the first-place winner and received a $7,500 scholarship. Kristian Maples of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, was awarded second place and received a $2,500 scholarship. Maples and Williams both received an additional $1,000 from the Indiana and Tennessee Burglar & Fire Alarm Associations, respectively. www.ESAweb.org.

The NATIONAL VOLUNTEER FIRE COUNCIL’s Second Vice Chairman, Chief Jeff Cash of the Cherryville (NC) Fire Department, was one of 35 stakeholders appointed to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)—Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) new Local, State, Tribal, and Federal Preparedness Task Force, which was created by the DHS Appropriations Act of 2010. The task force is charged with, but not limited to, making recommendations for all levels of government regarding disaster and emergency guidance and policy, federal grants, and federal requirements. The DHS Appropriations Act calls for a written report from the task force to be delivered to Congress by September 2010. www.nvfc.org.

The FDNY FOUNDATIONpresented its annual Fire Commissioner’s Humanitarian Award to UNITED TECHNOLOGIES CORPoration (UTC) Chairman and CEO Louis Chênevert in recognition of the company’s longtime support for fire prevention and public safety in New York City. UTC companies have supported the FDNY for many years. Since 1987, every recruit to go through the FDNY fire academy has trained on a Kidde Fire Trainer simulator; Kidde is a unit of UTC Fire & Security. Pierce Manufacturing has sold and delivered seven Pierce® fire trucks to the General Volunteer Fire Department in Lima, Peru. The purchase represents the first ever sale by Pierce in the country. The seven fire trucks are identical Pierce Responder™ pumpers. Each is equipped with a 1,000-gallon water tank with an integrated 100-gallon foam tank; 1,250-gpm single-stage pump; a single agent Class B foam system; an electric hosereel; and a hosebed that will accommodate 1,500 feet of 21⁄2-inch hose and 400 feet of 11⁄2-inch hose. Each vehicle is also equipped with a roof ladder, an extension ladder, a pike pole, and other loose equipment.
