AGILENT TECHNOLOGIES INC., manufacturer of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs), received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its Heartstream FR2 AED for use on children. The Heartstream FR2 AED, when equipped with specially designed defibrillation pads, can be used on infants and children under age eight. The American Heart Association recommends lower levels of energy for children, which can result in dangerous treatment delays while waiting for specialized equipment and trained personnel.

FECHHEIMER BROTHERS COMPANY, designer, manufacturer, and distributor of fire stationwear uniforms, received ISO 9001 registration from Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL). The registration includes the company’s Cincinnati, Ohio; Hodgenville, Kentucky; and Grantsville, Maryland sites. The ISO 9001 standard focuses on quality system requirements for a company’s design, manufacturing, installation, and servicing processes.

PIERCE MANUFACTURING, INC. won a $5.6 million contract for three aerials and 11 pumpers from the Sacramento (CA) Fire Department. The new apparatus will replace equipment with more than 20 years of service.

All of the new apparatus will feature Allison HD 4060PR transmissions and the TAK-4 independent front suspension. The three aerials will feature 105-foot heavy-duty ladders on Dash custom chassis, 470-hp engines, 245.5-inch wheelbases, tilt cabs with seating for six, and a top speed of between 67 and 70 mph. The 11 pumpers will include 430-hp engines, 500-gallon polypropylene water tanks, 1,500-gpm Waterous pumps, cabs with seating for six, and a top speed of between 67 and 70 mph. The 14 apparatus will be delivered between March and June 2002.

THE ASTORIA FIRE: POST HEROES FUND has been established to help the families of three Fire Department of New York firefighters who perished in a Father’s Day fire. The New York Post newspaper provided $10,000-start-up donation for the fund, which it launched with the help of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, which will administer the fund.
