  • The WILDFIRE MITIGATION AWARDS COMMITTEE announced its 2016 award winners. Established in 2014, the awards are the highest commendation for the innovation and leadership displayed by individuals and organizations committed to wildfire preparedness.   • The FIRE DEPARTMENT SAFETY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION (FDSOA) announced that the Phoenix (AZ) Fire Department is now an official regional training and certification center for incident safety officers within the Phoenix Regional Automatic Aid System. This year, the International Association of Fire Chief’s Safety Health & Survival Section partnered with the FDSOA to host the 2016 Safety Forum. After a meeting with each board, the organizations agreed they will continue to work together to bring safety education to as many chiefs and safety officers across North America. www.fdsoa.org.

  • PIERCE MANUFACTURING INC. delivered two Pierce® Enforcer® HazMat vehicles to serve with the Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal’s (OSFM’s) statewide Regional Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Teams System. This agency is charged with responding to hazardous materials emergency incidents that exceed the resources and capabilities of local jurisdictions. The vehicle replacement program includes a 10-year contract between the OSFM and Pierce for the procurement of Pierce Enforcer apparatus. Created in 1989, OSFM established 13 strategically located statewide to provide swift response to hazardous materials incidents.   • DAVID SEGURA, a 32-year firefighting veteran, was named the new chief of the Huntington Beach (CA) Fire Department (HBFD) after a national search. Segura’s first day on the job will be April 4. He succeeds Patrick McIntosh, who retired in November 2015 after six years on job. During the last 29 years in the Long Beach (CA) Fire Department, Segura moved up in the ranks from firefighter to paramedic, from captain to battalion chief, and from assistant chief to deputy chief. The HBFD has an annual operating budget of $45.6 million, eight fire stations, 198 full-time positions, a regional training center, and a marine safety headquarters. In 2014, HBFD responded to more than 17,000 emergency incidents.
  • Binghamton (NY) Fire Department (BFD) Chief DANIEL L. THOMAS will retire on April 9, 2016, after spending 40 years with the department. Thomas joined the BFD as a firefighter on November 29, 1975. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1984, to captain in 1987, to assistant chief in 1993, to deputy chief in 1999, and finally to chief in 2007. Thomas’ father, Lieutenant William F. Thomas, was a 38-year veteran of the BFD, while his great uncle, William D. Thomas, was also a former BFD Chief.
  • KEITH WEAVER was sworn in as the new chief of the Bayonne (NJ) Fire Department on March 4. Weaver, a 26-year veteran of the BFD, takes over for Greg Rogers, who retired on March 1. Weaver rose to the ranks of lieutenant, captain, battalion chief, and deputy chief in 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2011, respectively, according to city officials. As deputy chief, Weaver was in charge of department operations and administration, overseeing the day-to-day operations, safety, training, and activities of the department under Rogers’ direction. In 2010, Weaver was also appointed coordinator of the city’s Office of Emergency Management.
