  • SMEAL FIRE APPARATUS CO. promoted several key executives and created a new executive-level position to lead the company’s customer service, product quality, and customer satisfaction initiatives. The moves are intended to align the organizational structure and leadership around the company’s core mission objectives of quality, delivery time, and customer experience. Mike Bowman has been named vice president of sales. Joe Heilhecker has been promoted to vice president of operational excellence, manufacturing systems, and lean.   • GLOBE MANUFACTURING COMPANY continued its partnership with the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund at FDIC International 2016, the nation’s largest firefighter training conference and exhibition, held April 18-23 in Indianapolis, Indiana. With its supplier partner, 3M, Globe invited attendees to try on its new ATHLETIX™ and G-XTREME® 3.0 turnout gear and show their strength on a high striker. Firefighters then spun a wheel to determine a donation-$10, $20, $50, or $100-to the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund in their name.   • The HOME FIRE SPRINKLER COALITION (HFSC) celebrated its 20th anniversary with a side-by-side fire sprinkler demonstration at the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA’s) annual Conference & Expo. Board President Lorraine Carli recognized the founding members, the NFPA, the American Fire Sprinkler Association, and the National Fire Sprinkler Association for improving awareness of home fire sprinklers and organizing the HFSC. The HFSC also comprises the Canadian Automatic Sprinkler Association, FM Global, International Association of Fire Chiefs, National Association of State Fire Marshals, and National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, among many others. HFSC recently launched a mobile-friendly Web site that allows visitors to more easily access its comprehensive library of free teaching tools no matter the device they are using. www.homefiresprinkler.org.
  • PAUL CONWAY FIRE announced Dave Liske as its new sales representative for Northwest Illinois and Eastern Iowa. Liske is a 31-year fire service veteran and a captain at the Rock Island (IL) Arsenal Fire Department. Prior to this hire, he was a 20-year member of the McCausland (IA) Volunteer Fire Department. Liske is also a MABAS 43 Hazmat Team leader, a member of the Illinois Task Force 1, a fire officer IV, a hazmat technician, and a technical rescue technician.   • The HOWARD COUNTY (MD) DEPARTMENT OF FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS Silver Award for implementing quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience severe heart attacks. Every year, more than 250,000 people experience an ST elevation myocardial infarction, the most deadly type of heart attack caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. Mission: Lifeline’s EMS recognition program recognizes emergency medical services for their efforts in improving systems of care and improving the quality of life for these patients. Agencies that receive the Mission: Lifeline Silver award have demonstrated at least 75 percent compliance for each required achievement measure for one year. www.hcdfrs.gov.
  • ALEXIS FIRE EQUIPMENT announced a partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, which is leading the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. The current partnership will be effective until April 15, 2017. Alexis will donate $1,000 for every fire and medical unit sold within the continental United States. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has increased the survival rate for all from four percent before opening in 1962 to 94 percent today. www.alexisfire.com.

Names in the News

  • SAM MONEY received the FDIC International 2016 Volunteer of the Year award in Indianapolis, Indiana, in April. Money is a firefighter in Florence, Kentucky, and attends FDIC as part of the Eastern Kentucky University volunteers. Presenting the award was Diane Rothschild, conference director.
  • BOB HOFF was named the new chief of the Carol Stream (IL) Fire Protection District. Hoff was previously the Chicago (IL) Fire Department commissioner. He will oversee a district with three fire stations and about 60 sworn employees. Hoff first joined Carol Stream in 2012 after he stepped down as the head of the nation’s second-largest fire department. He has been a firefighter for more than four decades. The length of Hoff’s contract will likely run three years.
  • JOSH WOODS was named the new chief of the Mayflower (AR) Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD). Woods took over for David Batt on May 20, who served as the interim fire chief following Carl Rossini’s resignation on May 3. Woods has served as a volunteer firefighter since 2015. Prior to joining MVFD, he was a member of the Sherwood (AR) Fire Department, where he worked since 2002. He is a graduate of the Arkansas Fire Academy and has degrees in fire science and emergency medical services (EMS). He is also a certified as a fire and EMS instructor. Woods is the president of the State Fire EMS Board and a board member of the Arkansas EMS Association and is on the State Critical Incident Stress Management Team.
