Oct. 1—Firefighters from multiple towns are battling a blaze at the Eagle Point Energy Center trash facility in Orrington.
The initial call about the fire at the facility came in at 8:21 p.m., according to a firefighter from the Brewer Fire Department, who said the report came from a sighting across the Penobscot River.
The firefighter said the blaze is in the area where trash is collected and sorted and that the blaze had gone up through the roof.
The facility, formerly known as Penobscot Energy Recovery Co., or PERC, has operated as a trash incinerator for the region. It was bought by new owners in March.
Hydrants at the facility were found to be out of service, so fire departments were forced to use tankers, the Brewer firefighter said.
“This is probably going to be a lengthy event,” he said, estimating that firefighters would be there through the night.
