IAAI voices support for ATF as separate agency
Noting that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) “is the only federal agency many small and rural areas can rely on for assistance in arson investigations,” the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) has gone on record as supporting the continued existence of the ATF as a separate agency within the Department of the Treasury. The ATF works in conjunction with fire service agencies in matters involving bombings, arson-for-profit schemes, and the improper use or storage of explosives.
The agency`s independent status appears to be precarious due to the Clinton administration`s “reinventing government” initiative, which proposes that the ATF be made a division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the prevailing political climate in Congress.
