Mother, Two Daughters Killed in NY Apartment Fire

According to a report from ABC7, a 40-year-old mother and her eight-and 10-year old daughters died in a fast-moving fire in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn early Friday morning.

The fire erupted in their third-floor unit on Gates Avenue at 5:05 a.m. The three victims were transported to Woodhull University Hospital, where they were pronounced deceased.

Three other residents were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

After arrival to the building, Fire Department of New York (FDNY) crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames. They pulled the victims out of the apartment and attempted life-saving measures, including CPR, but were unsuccessful.

FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said crews were on scene within three minutes, but called the fire “very advanced” in the apartment’s kitchen.

FDNY Chief Sarrocco said firefighters “passed the fire to get to the rear bedrooms,” where they discovered the victims, who were showing some burns, smoke inhalation, and were not breathing.

Kavanagh said the unit did have a hard-wired smoke alarm, but officials are not sure if it was working. The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
