National EMS Memorial Service set for May 24, 1997
Emergency medical service providers who died while on duty will be honored May 24, 1997, at the National EMS Memorial Service in Roanoke, Virginia. All volunteer and career personnel who died in any year may be nominated. Deadline for nominations is December 31, 1996. The nominations will be reviewed by a national committee. There is no fee for submitting nominations.
The memorial, founded by the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, was established in 1993. Since that time, 96 providers from 27 states have been honored. The names of those honored are engraved on individual brass leaves that are made part of the “Tree of Life” memorial, a special display in “To The Rescue,” the national EMS museum in Roanoke, which highlights the history of EMS and the lifesaving tools, technology, and training associated with today`s volunteer and career EMS personnel.
In addition, a photograph and brief biography of each honoree are placed in the National EMS Memorial Book. During the service, a family member/colleague is presented with an American flag that has flown over the U.S. Capitol and recognizes the EMS provider`s community service, a single white rose signifying love of others, and a medallion.
