According to reports from ABC7 and CBS2, fires that erupted in separate apartment buildings in Chicago, Illinois, killed a 67-year-old man and injured two others, ages 33 and 61, respectively, early Tuesday morning, the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) said.
The first fire broke out at around 1:35 a.m. in the kitchen of an apartment near 75th Street and South Shore Drive.
CFD crews quickly extinguished the fire, but police officers and firefighters discovered a 67-year-old man lying on the floor unresponsive with what turned out to be second-degree burns and smoke inhalation. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second fire broke out just before 6 a.m. in a four-story building in the 1500-block of West 91st Street in the Brainerd neighborhood, fire officials said.
A 33-year-old man was transported to Advocate Christ Hospital in critical condition, while a 61-year-old woman was transported to Little Company of Mary Hospital.
Chicago police said the cause of that fire was determined to be accidental.
