FROSTBURG — One person was killed Monday when a pre-dawn fire swept through a three-unit apartment building at 210 Welsh Hill Road, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Two other occupants escaped the 3:27 a.m. blaze. Fire investigators said the victim may have reentered the burning building after initially escaping. Investigators had not determined if smoke alarms were in the building.
“Our hearts are with the Frostburg community after a tough morning. This is another tragic reminder to check your smoke alarms. Have an escape plan, and once you and your loved ones get out, stay out,” said Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray.
Fire investigators believe the fire started in the garage, and the cause remains under investigation.
The three-story structure was engulfed in fire and flames were reportedly shooting across the roadway when first units arrived at the scene located off Route 936 and Cherry Lane, several blocks away from the Frostburg State University campus.
Frostburg and Shaft volunteer firefighters attempted entry through a basement door but were pushed back by the flames, Roger Bennett, deputy director of the Allegany County Department of Emergency Services, said.
Siding of adjacent two-story residential structures was melted off by the intense heat and fire, Bennett said.
The victim will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for positive identification and cause of death.
A joint investigation by deputy state fire marshals, Frostburg Police and the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit continues, which is standard procedure in a fatal fire.
Firefighters from Eastern Garrett, Midland, Cresaptown, Ridgeley, Barton, Goodwill and LaVale also responded to the scene along with DES ambulances also responded.
The families were being assisted by Safe Space Cumberland, which said it was in need of clothes and shoes of all sizes, non-perishable food, blankets and any other essentials to assist the victims.
