Three RI Firefighters Hurt in Raging Hotel Fire

According to a report from WPRI, three firefighters suffered minor injuries after a massive fire erupted inside the Wayfinder Hotel in Newport, Rhode Island, Monday evening.

Just after 8 p.m., crews responded to the four-story hotel on Admiral Kalbfus Road as flames and smoke emanated from the roof and windows were spotted from miles away.

Departments from six different districts also responded with mutual aid to extinguish the flames.

Newport Fire Department Deputy Chief Mark Riding said no residents were hurt, while one firefighter went through a floor, but he was rescued by his crews.

After that firefighter went through the floor, Riding said all companies were told to leave the hotel interior and begin its fire attack from the exterior.

The fire wiped out the middle section of the building, which is considered a complete loss.

Riding said the fire marshal has been at the scene all night. Crews will remain on scene to put out hotspots, and the building inspector is expected to arrive this morning.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
