Wichita Latest City Hit with Ransomware Attack; Fire, Police Impacted

Wichita Kansas Fire Department

A cyberattack has prompted the city fo Wichita, Kansas, to shut down its computer network, according to a report.

The Wichita Eagle says the ransomware attack has rendered some city service unavailable, and firefighters and police have resorted to backup procedures.

The city could not offer reporters a timeline for when systems will be brought back online.

Wichita is not alone among major U.S. cities to be recently felled by such cyberattacks. In 2023, Dallas firefighters were forced to adapt when a ransomware attack crippled city systems and networks, and earlier this year emergency communications in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, fell prey to a cyberattack. A 2023 ransomware attack also caused major headaches in Indiana during a security breach of the state’s Medicaid system. In a separate incident, a cell service outage in February briefly disrupted the 911 system in Massachusetts.
