Rhode Island Roof Collapse Just Misses Fire Fighters

Fire fighters attacking a restaurant fire in North Kingstown, R.I., last April 27 were pulled from the concrete block and wood building just before the roof collapsed. When the air-conditioning and gas-fed heating equipment on the roof fell inside, the gas supply pipes broke and presented another serious problem.

Coal Bed Fire Threatens Pa. Town After Burning Underground 19 Years

For the last 19 years a fire has been burning out of control in Centralia, Pa. More accurately, the fire is under Centralia. The town was built over a vast bed of coal covering 94 square miles, and 140 acres of that underground fuel are burning. No one knows how or when the fire will be extinguished.

Another Million-Dollar-Plus Fire Strikes Site of Former Canneries

Another major fire broke out along Cannery Row in Monterey, Calif. This one was fought by 61 fire fighters with 11 pieces of apparatus. Four buildings were destroyed and two were damaged with a loss estimated at $1.75 million. Cannery Row has been plagued with fires over the years.
