Winterizing Apparatus Cooling Systems

As the winter season approaches, many departments will be servicing their apparatus cooling systems. However, keep in mind that maintaining a cooling system is an ongoing process that should be carried out more than once a year. Unfortunately, many departments service their apparatus cooling systems on an annual basis only.

Dispatches

The month of May was proclaimed "West Virginia Fire Service Recognition Month" by the state's Governor Arch A. Moore, Jr. This proclamation was made in appreciation of the dedication that has been shown by the state's 10,000 firefighters, who have been performing under extremely adverse conditions over the past months.

Activism or Terrorism?

Speeding seemed to be more tolerated than ever along New York City's Grand Central Parkway. Tolerated may be a poor description for the workload of Motorcycle 3's skeleton force on duty in the summers of the late 1960s. The motorists couldn't see the patrol cars, but we could. They were with us in every firehouse of Brooklyn, NY's Brownsville area. During those riot-torn times, each responding fire truck had a police vehicle assigned to shadow it through the blighted streets run after run, conflagration after conflagration.

I take exception to Roy G. Gelbhaus' comment in the Letters section of the July 1986 issue of FIRE ENGINEERING. His comment about the 65-yearold volunteer firefighter possibly being a marathon runner and that activity possibly causing heart attack grates the nerves.
