The Fire Hydrant

Since the earliest days of organized firefighting, the success or failure of fireground operations has hinged on the ability to obtain and deliver sufficient quantities of the extinguishing agent, primarily water. In response to water supply problems, extensive central water systems have been developed, and the fire hydrant has become the firefighter’s means of accessing the water system and controlling water flow.
PRESSURE REDUCING VALUES

PRESSURE REDUCING VALUES

There are two general types of PRwile those that reduce pressure only while water is flowing, and those that regulate the pressure under both flowing and nonflowing (static) conditions. PRVs are used in both sprinkler and standpipe* systems to prevent system overpressurization.
AERIAL APPARATUS ARRIVAL AND PLACEMENT

AERIAL APPARATUS ARRIVAL AND PLACEMENT

WHENEVER ROUNDTABLE discussions center on “truck work,” a repeated concern for aerial ladder placement never fails to pop up. While rules and guidelines can be as many and as varied as there are fire departments, I want to share some thoughts that may be common to us all.

Liquified Petroleum Gas

LIQUIFIED PETROLEUM gas is a highly flammable, colorless mixture of gases, predominantly propane and butane; there are probably a few other trace gases, such as propylene and isobutane mixed in. Since liquified petroleum gas is mostly propane and butane, these two gases will lend their properties to the mixture, with a few exceptions.

New brothers, new sisters

We were trying to steal time. Four great friends- firefighters-three retired, one active. Eight days in Mexico with no thoughts of magazines, high-rise real estate, sales records and, in one case, no South Bronx responses. Waiting to depart from LaGuardia, Dennis hurried to the group with the day’s newspapers tolling the death of a brother New York City firefighter, killed in performance of duty as a volunteer in his hometown of Port Washington, New York.

THE FIREFIGHTER IN COURT

THE FIREFIGHTER IN COURT

PERHAPS YOU RESPOND to an automobile accident in which people are trapped. Maybe you respond to an incident involving criminal assault. If you’re a fire prevention inspector or a fire marshal, you may have to cite a building owner into court because of code violations. If you’re an arson investigator, it might be your first arrest.
