The Fire Hydrant

Since the earliest days of organized firefighting, the success or failure of fireground operations has hinged on the ability to obtain and deliver sufficient quantities of the extinguishing agent, primarily water. In response to water supply problems, extensive central water systems have been developed, and the fire hydrant has become the firefighter’s means of accessing the water system and controlling water flow.

Liquified Petroleum Gas

LIQUIFIED PETROLEUM gas is a highly flammable, colorless mixture of gases, predominantly propane and butane; there are probably a few other trace gases, such as propylene and isobutane mixed in. Since liquified petroleum gas is mostly propane and butane, these two gases will lend their properties to the mixture, with a few exceptions.

Standpipe Operations

If it is determined through proper size-up considerations that a standpipe system will be used to supply the firefighting attack lines, the first engine company to arrive must connect to and supply the fire department connection (Siamese) that will supply water to the riser(s) from which those lines will be operated.

A live-action color film, SMOKEY'S FIRE SAFETY TIPS, teaches children the dangers and consequences of playing with matches. The film, available from Syndistar, Inc., is for children in grades K-2. Smokey and his Animal Forest Patrol are featured in the film, which includes footage of a forest fire and of wildlife racing to save themselves.

YANKEE COACH INC., which specializes in the custom production of ambulances and emergency vehicle equipment, has been purchased by the American Modular Body Corp. of Smithfield, Rhode Island. Under American Modular, Yankee Coach will remain in Palmer, Massachusetts, and plans call for the expansion of operations and the hiring of additional staff.

New brothers, new sisters

We were trying to steal time. Four great friends- firefighters-three retired, one active. Eight days in Mexico with no thoughts of magazines, high-rise real estate, sales records and, in one case, no South Bronx responses. Waiting to depart from LaGuardia, Dennis hurried to the group with the day’s newspapers tolling the death of a brother New York City firefighter, killed in performance of duty as a volunteer in his hometown of Port Washington, New York.
