Firefighters put out a blaze at a commercial building in Rocky Hill on Wednesday night and had a brief scare involving what were initially believed to be potentially hazardous materials.

Fire crews were dispatched to ProREZ Performance Resins & Coatings, at 712 Brook St., just after 9:40 p.m. when a fire alarm in the building was activated, according to Michael P. Garrahy, chief of the Rocky Hill Fire Department.

Garrahy said the first units on scene found “moderate smoke showing” and water flowing from beneath a loading dock garage door. Upon discovering that the building was burning, crews forced their way inside and found heavy smoke and flames inside the rear of the structure, according to Garrahy.

The building’s sprinkler system contained the fire long enough to allow crews to get inside and put it out.

While battling the blaze, crews identified what they believed were potentially hazardous materials before discovering that they posed no threat to them or the environment, Garrahy said. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to the scene and confirmed the materials were not dangerous after the blaze was put out, according to Garrahy.

No injuries were reported.

While Rocky Hill crews were at the scene, members of the Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department provided an engine for town coverage as mutual aid.

Crews cleared the scene around 10 p.m. after ventilating the building.

The local fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
