USFA offers new publications

The U.S. Fire Administration, part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has announced the availability of the following publications:

Technical Rescue Technology Assessment. Presents the latest technology available for performing challenging operations including confined-space rescue; trench, water, and urban rescue; search and rescue; rope and high-angle rescue; and agricultural rescue. A directory of technical rescue equipment manufacturers listed by technical category is also included.

New Technologies in Vehicle Extrication. Presents the results of a nationwide survey of selected urban, suburban, and rural EMS and fire departments that evaluated the safety and effectiveness of equipment they used to rescue accident victims from damaged vehicles. Includes also information obtained during on-site observations of vehicle extrication training sessions; a directory of major tool manufacturers and their product lists; and a review of current literature on vehicle extrication techniques; recommendations for modifying and enhancing vehicle-extrication equipment, especially for late-model vehicles; and an overview of trends in vehicle construction and composite materials. Designs, such as unibody construction, and materials, such as plastics, are discussed in terms of the challenges they present to the rescue equipment user.

Both documents may be obtained without cost from the USFA, Publications, 16825 South Seton Avenue, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.
